229,000 Micro-Nonprofits, 208,000 Domains: Key Findings

The short version: we analyzed IRS 990-N data for every active micro-nonprofit in the U.S. Here are the five numbers that matter.

We analyzed 229,829 active U.S. micro-nonprofits — organizations filing IRS Form 990-N with under $50K in annual revenue. Youth sports leagues, church ministries, animal rescues, volunteer fire departments.

We DNS-checked 208,078 unique domains. Here's what we found.

Key statistics from the micro-nonprofit infrastructure analysis

Five Numbers That Matter

30.7% have no email infrastructure. 63,790 domains returned no MX record. No mail server, no inbox. The domain exists but doesn't handle email. The treasurer uses a personal Gmail account.

27.1% run Google Workspace. 56,362 domains. Google for Nonprofits offers free Workspace to eligible 501(c)(3) organizations. For orgs under $50K a year, "free" is the entire decision.

11.2% run Office 365. 23,261 domains. A distant second. The rest is fragmented across hundreds of hosting providers.

84,417 are chapter or affiliate structures. Over a third of these orgs operate under a parent organization but manage their own domains, their own platforms, their own (lack of) security — independently.

Platform share hasn't moved in five years. Google has held steady at ~27% since 2020. Office 365 at ~11%. The infrastructure decisions these orgs made years ago are the ones they're living with now.

What This Means

This is a capacity gap, not a negligence problem. These organizations handle donor data, process financial transactions, and manage community information — but they do it with no IT staff, no security budget, and in many cases, no email infrastructure at all.

The full analysis covers year-over-year platform trends, chapter/affiliate governance fragmentation, and a practical "minimum viable security stack" for each tier of organization.
